Unlocking the Secrets of Motion: Your Guide to Human Movement Science
Have you ever wondered about the intricate science behind a perfect golf swing, a powerful sprint, or even the simple act of walking? Human Movement Science is the interdisciplinary field dedicated to answering these questions. It combines principles from biomechanics, kinesiology, anatomy, and technology to analyze how and why we move. This knowledge is pivotal for enhancing athletic performance, preventing injuries, improving rehabilitation protocols, and optimizing everyday movement for better health.
We are excited to introduce a comprehensive 8-week undergraduate course designed to demystify this fascinating science. Led by world-class experts, this program offers a structured journey from basic anatomy to advanced applications in sport and exercise.
Meet Your Expert Instructors
This course brings together unique expertise from the realms of sport performance and clinical biomechanics.
Prof. Shruti Bhandurge brings a wealth of experience from the front lines of high-performance sport. With a background in Sport and Exercise Science from Victoria University, Australia, and a PhD in Sport Performance, her career includes pivotal roles such as a high-performance analyst during the Australian Open with Tennis Australia. Her academic publications span sport biomechanics, coaching science, performance analysis, and artificial intelligence. Having worked and studied across Australia, New Zealand, India, and the UK, Prof. Bhandurge provides a global perspective on applying movement science to elite performance.
Prof. Subham Badhyal offers deep expertise in the clinical and engineering aspects of human movement. With a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering focusing on orthopaedic biomechanics from IIT Ropar, his work bridges the gap between engineering and medicine. As the former Technical Director for the Bubba Watson and PING Golf Motion Analysis Laboratory at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona, and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he specializes in human motion analysis, orthopaedic biomechanics, and the development of rehabilitation devices. His insight is invaluable for understanding movement pathologies and technological solutions.
Course Overview: What You Will Learn
This 8-week undergraduate program is meticulously curated for students with a 12th-grade pass or equivalent. It is categorized under Humanities and Social Sciences and Sports Science. The course layout is designed to build your knowledge step-by-step:
| Week | Focus Area | Key Learning Objectives |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Introduction to Human Movement Science | Understand the scope, history, and importance of the field. |
| Week 2 | The Human Body | Explore the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems relevant to movement. |
| Week 3 | Fundamental Anatomical Movements | Learn planes of motion, axes, and basic movement terminology (e.g., flexion, extension, abduction). |
| Week 4 | Concepts of Kinesiology & Biomechanics | Dive into forces, levers, torque, and the mechanics of musculoskeletal function. |
| Week 5 | Characteristics & Enhancement of Human Movement | Analyze qualities like speed, power, coordination, and methods for performance enhancement. |
| Week 6 | Application to Fundamental Movements & Exercises | Apply scientific principles to walking, running, jumping, squatting, and lifting. |
| Week 7 | Application to Sport Skills | Deconstruct sport-specific skills (e.g., throwing, kicking, swinging) using movement science. |
| Week 8 | Recap and Revision | Consolidate knowledge and review key concepts from the entire course. |
Why Study Human Movement Science?
The applications of this field are vast and impactful:
- Sports Performance: Coaches and athletes use biomechanical analysis to refine technique, increase efficiency, and maximize power output.
- Injury Prevention & Rehabilitation: Understanding abnormal movement patterns helps in designing preventative strategies and effective rehab programs for quicker recovery.
- Clinical Applications: As Prof. Badhyal's work shows, it's crucial in gait analysis, designing orthopaedic implants, and developing assistive devices.
- Fitness & Coaching: Personal trainers and strength coaches apply kinesiology to ensure exercises are performed safely and effectively for all clients.
- Technology Development: Drives innovation in wearable tech, motion capture, and simulation software used in sports, gaming, and healthcare.
Essential Learning Resource
To support your learning, the course utilizes the foundational textbook: "Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise." This text will provide detailed explanations and examples that complement the weekly modules, offering a deeper dive into the mechanical principles governing human movement.
